I have discovered that no matter what other action you might expect to happen when right clicking, if you right click anywhere with a golem in your active hotbar slot, the game attempts to place the golem.
So, for instance, if you happen to be holding a golem and you go to close a door, the golem will be placed on the block directly above the door, that is to say, usually within a solid block, where it will immediately shatter into pieces.
These things are expensive, and Machina is a tough and pricey aspect to get hold of. IMO it should not be so easy to break them performing an otherwise ordinary and safe task. I almost lost this same golem due to using my totem of attraction with the golem in an active hotbar slot. The lil guy was placed all the way on top of my totem, and I thought he disappeared. I could still hear his little hands clicking away, and eventually found him, only to have him break when I went to close the front door of my house.
