Update name and organization fields in User accounts

Given the change of fields on the new sign up page, (First name became first and last name in one field, and Last name became "Name of your place of Work"), we need to update all users who signed up using the old form to match the new field configuration.

I would like to test our assumptions on this issue. Here are some observations:

I believe this issue is related to the BuddyPress "Extended Profile" only. However, what is the user's Display Name? Is it the first name only or is it the Place of Work?
On the spam accounts that were recently created, they did not contain a last name in their Profile.

Should we keep this option enabled:
Settings > Buddy Press > Options > Profile Settings > Profile Syncing > Checkbox: Enable BuddyPress to WordPress profile syncing
