What happened?

When performing an update from G5.1.12 to 6.5.1 on my W11 PC, the update appears to work but then WF fails to launch. I've tried both manually running the installer for 6.5.1 and enabling updates in the browser, but in both cases nothing happens afterwards. I tried a complete uninstall with Revo, that made Revo hang. Manually deleting all associated files, folders and registry entries then run the installer for 6.5.1 did not work either. The only thing than got WF back and working for me was to reinstall G5.1.12 again.

Any suggestions on how to successfully update to the latest version?

Reproducible?

  • I have checked that this issue cannot be reproduced on Mozilla Firefox.

Sadly, this still isn't working for me. I can manually install WF and it shows the "Upgrade" button, but upon launching it does nothing. No browser is launched and no app is shown running in Task Manager. I did try using the upgrade function within WF, and while it prompted me to restart to upgrade (3 different times), the same thing happened: nothing launched afterwards. I've since been able to install G5.1.13 and have it up and running again.

Try downloading the setup from their website on https://www.waterfox.net/download/ & running it 'as administrator', rather than using the 6.5.1 auto-update.

You may need to uninstall 6.5.1 completely - use an uninstaller app like https://www.revouninstaller.com/revo-uninstaller-free-download/

(I'd export any username/passwords via wf security password settings first so you can re-import them eventually.
)use the dropdown menu from the ... upper right corner)

@kroncke-w thanks for the suggestions, but as noted in my initial post, I've tried those steps already.

I could give Revo another try and maybe wait a bit longer to see if the hang resolves itself...

I will never figure out what happened, but wanted to post this update anyway. Over the weekend I gave up on getting WF to update to the latest version, so I decided to give LibreWolf a try in it's place. For what I use this browser for, it works just fine (so does WF). Today after work, I switched my KVM back to that particular PC and noticed the WF shortcut on my desktop. Having thought I left it in the uninstalled status (prior to installing LibreWolf), I clicked it. Imagine my surprise to see WF launch, AND it's V6.4.2. I have no idea why apparently installing the other browser made WF decide to start working, but maybe @MrAlex94 can shed some light on it...
