The Genesis games Jurassic Park & Jurassic Park Rampage Edition have low pitched voices / screams for humans and dinosaurs. The other sound effects and the music seems to play correctly, though.

I've checked Earthworm Jim and can confirm it has the same issues. Since you assume it could affect games using GEMS I've tried other games which use GEMS (e.g. Comix Zone, True Lies, Robocop vs. Terminator) and they all have the same problem with low pitched sounds and some other audio issues.

Which is strange, because I would have thought that the samples would be higher-pitched, due to the lack of the Z80 being stalled by DMA transfers. And yet, somehow, it appears that sample playback is already too slow even without the stalling. I have no idea what the cause could be. At least GEMS' source code is available, so I can look at it to see what strange things it is doing.
