Could anyone please explain how the compilers have been embedded inside the app and how they compile code in the app?

As of Eclipse Java Compiler, we've only modified the org.eclipse.jdt.internal.compiler.util.Util class to replace InputStream#readAllBytes and InputStream#readNBytes with alternate methods that work on android (these were only implemented in Android 13). You can see its how it is usd for compiling the code here

For Javac, we use this port by Itsaky that is available on maven repository here For its implementation see here

Both of these are used as java libraries for the ease of use because the JDK is originally written in Java language only

Is there any alternate to the Eclipse Java compiler? As I feel that Eclipse seems pretty old.

The eclipse compiler we use is just 2 months old. But as an alternative you can try out Javac (official java compiler) port as mentioned earlier
