Feature Request: Dynatrace Metrics Provider for Kubernetes Horizontal Pod Autoscaler (HPA)

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

I'm always frustrated when using the default metrics providers for Kubernetes Horizontal Pod Autoscaler (HPA), as they often lack the detailed insights and granularity required to effectively manage and scale our applications. Current solutions don't provide comprehensive performance metrics or the ability to utilize advanced monitoring capabilities that Dynatrace offers. This limitation hampers our ability to maintain optimal application performance and resource utilization in dynamic environments.

Describe the solution you'd like

I would like to see a Dynatrace Metrics Provider integrated with Kubernetes HPA. This integration should allow HPA to leverage Dynatrace's rich set of metrics and analytics, enabling more intelligent and efficient scaling decisions. Specifically, the solution should:

  • Enable HPA to use Dynatrace metrics directly for scaling decisions.
  • Provide seamless integration with existing Kubernetes clusters and configurations.
  • Support custom metrics that are crucial for our specific applications and services.
  • Offer detailed documentation and examples to facilitate easy setup and management.

Describe alternatives you've considered

  1. Custom Metrics Server: Setting up a custom metrics server to collect and expose the required metrics to HPA. However, this approach involves significant overhead in terms of development and maintenance, and it lacks the comprehensive features provided by Dynatrace.
  2. Third-Party Metrics Solutions: Using other third-party metrics solutions like Prometheus. While effective, these solutions do not offer the same level of integration and advanced monitoring capabilities as Dynatrace.
  3. Manual Scaling: Implementing manual scaling strategies based on Dynatrace insights. This approach is less efficient and does not leverage the automated scaling capabilities of HPA, leading to potential resource inefficiencies and increased operational workload.

Additional context

Adding Dynatrace as a metrics provider for Kubernetes HPA would greatly enhance our ability to manage application performance and scalability. The integration should be robust, secure, and easy to deploy, with comprehensive support for various Kubernetes environments. Example configurations, best practices, and troubleshooting guides would be beneficial for a smooth implementation. Additionally, this feature would align with the growing need for more sophisticated and automated resource management solutions in cloud-native applications.
