The only way @elliotjaystocks could find to create an actual vectorised, transparent SVG with a COLRv1 variable font was to first create the text in Illustrator (which only supports SVG color fonts, so with default axis values), outline it, and then paste that into Figma, ready to export as per the usual GFK process. But, Illustrator doesn’t support custom palettes or variations, so there was no way to re-colour it to non-default color before exporting to Figma.
As I recall, we all faced the same issue in 2016, when only browsers really supported VF, and so at the top of the left sidebar on TN TypeTools the page selector has a "LOGO POGO" (😂) option.
But alas this seemed to depend on some server-side script that now 404s:
I suspect it may be possible to make a browser output a SVG from HTML element without server-side code, and a quick search found these:
Since COLRv1 VFs (and newer avar2+ VFs) will be developed over the next year or so, I'd love to have this feature added back to the new TypeTools+VideoProof tool :)
