Jafadrian-ISA

Description

Jafadrian-ISA is an afternoon project initially triggered by our curiosity to build a CPU on a FPGA board. Our project can be broken into 3 different parts. First, we designed our custom 16-bit ISA, then we built an assembler for our ISA with C++, and finally we built the CPU on a Cyclone V FPGA with Quartus and Verilog

ISA

The ISA choice of 16-bit was made in order to simplify the CPU build later in the project, yet provide enough functionality to support arithmetic operations, branching, and subroutines.

We use 16 16-bit registers including the Program Counter PC. All of the registers are accessible for read and write. The opcode is defined by the first 4 bits of the binary

The instructions defined are as follow (ascending 4-bit opcode order):

Unless the operation is a branch, the PC is always incremented after an instruction's execution. This is not shown in the below definitions

Load Immediate

Loads an 8-bit immediate in the lowest half of a register

Currently, we support IN and OUT. We can support up to 256 different I/O type operations (keyboard input, mouse input, VGA output, etc...)

Load a 10-bit value into lowest 10 bits of register from FPGA switches

To ensure input is made at the correct time, the IN operation holds the ROM instruction fetching until the user approves the SW[9:0] input using the KEY[0] button on the FPGA (telling the CPU "this is your input")

Assembler

Once the ISA was defined, we needed an assembler that would translate our assembly into binaries. We built a C++ assembler that reads an assembly file, decodes the instructions, and finds the correspondent binaries. These are written to a .mif file that will be used to initialize the FPGA ROM

Decoding

The assembler is very flexible as it uses a dictionary mapping the assembly instructions to the corresponding opcode and number of operands. We have three different types of opcodes: single operand (IO operations), two operands (immediate operations), and three operands (all other operations)

The assembler ommits comments. It also handles exceptions for incoherent assembly code (undefined instruction, out-of-range register index, invalid operands count, etc...)

Future work

Our next step from a software perspective is to implement a compiler for our ISA, which will allow us to implement a basic OS in the future and run it on out CPU on the FPGA

Verilog and FPGA implementation

Now that we have a nice 16-bit ISA and an assembler to build binary instructions, we dive into implementing the CPU on a FPGA board. We used a Cyclone V provided by our university, and built out design using Quartus Prime.

Design

The design selects the ROM address using the PC register (program counter) to fetch the corresponding instruction. Afterwards, we use wires to read the opcode, registers, and immediate / IO operation fields. We switch over the opcode to select which instruction has to be executed, and update the registers (including the program counter) accordingly. In the case of an IN operation, the LEDs go on signaling an input is required, and we hold the PC incrementation until the user validates the input termination (using KEY[0] on the FPGA). The value created vy the switches (SW[9:0]) is then written back to the corresponding register, and the process resumes normally. For the output, the destination register value is displayed on the 7 segment HEX blocks on the FPGA. Our model operates with 50MHz clock (FPGA limit) with one cycle per instruction.

Future work

Our next step from a hardware perspective is to implement a fast and optimized memory to support memory instructions. This will allow us to expand our I/O functionalities by adding a keyboard read, mouse read, audio input, VGA output, audio output.
