How to run WordCountLambda standalone? #3

From what I can tell, the WordCountLambda doesn't seem to use anything specific from the Confluent Platform. However, I am unable to run it standalone with a standard installation of Apache Kafka.

Why can't I run the sample without installing the Confluent Platform?
