I'm unsure exactly how this would be implemented, but if there were procedural decouplers that could detach things such as boosters, some vessels would be much easier to build. The procedural side decoupler would be a surface attach object and it would have a node on the outside for connecting objects.

While I'm not trying to push anything, I would also like to note that this would be able to solve the issue of the Booster tank's crossfeed (required for surface attach engines to work) from also supplying fuel to the engines that aren't directly attached to it. (assuming you removed its decoupler) The booster tank's crossfeed is a cheese that allows people to use shuttle-era fuel crossfeed decouplers 20 years before they were practical.
