Good list, Pedro! To the efficiency improvements, we might also add tires, which are incrementally improving their rolling resistance year by year. For modest mileage drivers, the rate of tire efficiency improvements can potentially almost entirely counteract the rate of battery capacity degradation - and the effective range remains almost the same! Maybe we could add steadily improving heat pumps, and smartly designed holistic heat management around the vehicle (like with Tesla's Octovalve), which can make a significant difference to efficiency in cold climates. I totally agree about solar panels - even if the energy is mainly used to keep the vehicle awake and communicating, and some cabin / battery pre-conditioning - this is going to become more common as PV cost & efficiency continues to improve. Even if adding just a few km a day, a solar panel also means never having to worry about leaving the car for a couple of weeks and vampire drain slowly emptying the battery towards zero - peace of mind. For very light electric vehicles (e.g. "peddle vans" used for local deliveries) a PV panel can potentially supply half or more of the energy requirement, so is particularly relevant. Look forward to seeing what ideas others may have in the comments. |

Technologies that will make electric vehicles even better
In 2010, when the first generation of mass-produced electric cars started to arrive, I felt that automakers were undermining electric cars on purpose.
Back then, most legacy automakers decided to use LMO battery cells with poor energy density and short cycle life in their electric cars. The biggest advantage of those cobalt-free battery cells was the lower cost, nonetheless the electric cars were being sold with a price three times higher than their gas-counterparts.
