A combination of factors are likely causing this. Unreasonably high purchase prices combined with fast depreciation and stories of crazy insurance costs on some models challenge affordability and have spooked people. For those who can't charge at home with solar or a smart tariff the public charging prices can result in higher fuel costs per mile than petrol or diesel. A few years ago, you could charge for free at supermarkets, or 20-30p/kWh at public chargepoints, whereas now it's 50-80p/kWh. The government pushing the 100% EV target date back from 2030 to 2035 also didn't help. Imo, we need more smaller reasonably priced EVs and better public charging prices (eg remove VAT on public charging, shift other environmental levies away from electricity, and encourage more price competition). The manufacturers need to get their act together and provide sensibly priced smaller cars, with reasonable pricing for major component repairs like battery or drivetrain failures that could currently write off a car due to repair costs, which is also freaking people out, and part of the insurance cost issue. |
