Also noting that Google Maps and Bing Maps position prominent controls to the right, I assume for this reason.

There's a proposed a media query to detect handedness: w3c/csswg-drafts#4443, but since that's not available perhaps the extension can have such a user preference, if you feel it's useful/important enough to spend time on.

I'm not sure if most mobile browsers support extensions, I know chrome, being the most popular, doesn't support it currently.

It's a great point, and it cuts across many issues and implicates responsive design for mobile platforms. e.g. https://maps4html.org/HTML-Map-Element-UseCases-Requirements/#use-case-add-custom-control
