Associated Series for Collections

Why can't collections like Trade Paperbacks be associated with the series they collect?

The thinking behind that is the TPB can contain issues from multiple series, and we are associating them on an individual issues (which if we wanted we can get the series from a simple queryset), so there isn't a need to do that.

On a series level, we use the associated field to link a series to it's annuals or if the series is renamed while continuing the current number, we link it to the new series.

I was just thinking that on a series level it makes sense to associate single issues series with their TPBs, more so those series with TPBs that also restart numbering like Batman (2016) series has multiple TPBs and from Volume 1 to 11 then it starts again from 1... and has done this 2 more times.

If the TPB has the associated issues that are collected within added, then you can automate adding the characters, teams, story titles easily (which can be requested here until that functionality is exposed to users), doing it on a series level doesn't really accomplish much at all.

Maybe if you gave some specific examples it might be more clear to what you're looking for.

Yeah, I know I didn't explain it very well.
What I mean is for example associating Batman TPB (2017) which is the series of Trade Paperbacks for Batman (2016) with the Batman (2016) series.

Simply put just being able to know from the series information that it has the following Collections

... then you can automate adding the characters, teams, story titles easily (which can be requested #213 until that functionality is exposed to users

I've been struggling with adding characters, teams and creators manually, even went extra step to create a script using Simyan to grab from Comic Vine API and scraping from League of Comic Geeks to compile information for easy entering. This automation sounds nice.

To do that we wouldn't need to associate the series, since that could information can be easily queried from the issues that have been associated with the TPB.

It's a simple admin action that will add the characters, team, and story titles (tho the ordering may be incorrect since it is based on the issues cover date), with that caveat that any associated issue that contains multiple stories in it will be skipped (since there is no easy way to determine what information is actually contained in the TPB).

This action also doesn't copy creator credits from the individual issue either, since not all credits are included in the TPB typically (variant covers, etc).

Eventually, I plan on exposing this functionality to the users, but that is on my TODO list since I'm not sure how I want to implement it (AJAX, HTMX, etc) just yet.
