The gauge system is not standardised across different metals. This means that the same gauge number can represent different thicknesses depending on the type of metal.
For example, 18 gauge steel is 0.0478 inches thick, but 18 gauge aluminium is 0.0403 inches thick. Similarly, 37 gauge stainless steel is 0.0066 inches thick, while 37 gauge aluminium is 0.0045 inches thick.
This variation is due to differences in the density and composition of different metals. Therefore, when comparing the thickness of different metals, it’s important to consider both the gauge number and the type of metal.
