One complaint my friends (completely new to QW) have with QuakeWorld is the HUHHH!! sound on every jump.

Could we add an ability to have options for the jump sound?

  • Sound for your jump & others (teammates & enemies) - on by default
  • Mute your jump sound
  • Mute all jump sounds

Muting all jump sounds would be a disadvantage... BUT... Leaving it as an option would be a fun little game mode where people can recklessly bunnyhopping around the map.

Personally, I'd like to hear my jump sound less anyways.

A cvar to mute all jump sounds makes sense to me, as long as it mutes both your jump sounds and other players'. It would be a nice option to have for race mode in particular.

Muting all jump sounds may give you a tiny advantage in some situations (since you can make out other sounds like pickups or respawns more easily), but it'll be a big disadvantage in most other cases.

You could also use a sound pack that makes the jump sound shorter and/or quieter, such as the mindgrid audio pack (remember to also install its plyrjmp8.wav file into qw/sound/player/, creating folders as needed). This is an audio pack that is allowed by the game on competitive rulesets, so it should work online.

  • Mute your jump sound

This could be argued to be a competitive advantage as it'd let you hear other players' sounds more easily, so some rulesets would likely have to forbid it. Perhaps it would be OK to have for spectating and watching demos still.

I thought about that last night, and I 100% agree that 'muting your jump sound' would increase the ability to hear.
