JPEG XL has better lossless compression than PNG (in general), is backwards-compatible to JPEG (no generation loss), has better lossy compression than JPEG, and is fast and standardized.
All existing images should not be converted in my opinion to not increase the repository size (git saves all old versions).
Added or changed images could use JPEG XL for a better compression.
