Nether paper source? And maybe a source for nether diamonds? #65
Comments
This sounds like a great idea. Side note, if you know a lot about what can and cannot be obtained in a pure nether run I'd love to hear more about it because I think it would be cool if Cinderscapes alone could make nether only runs more viable. |
Well, I think most things can be got in the nether, if you include loot in nether fortresses. Iron is a huge pain cause you can only get it from Piglins, piglin bastions, and nether fortresses, as far as I'm aware. Diamonds are nether fortresses only, and not a great chance, but they're diamonds so this isn't too unreasonable. Leather can be had from hoglins and as a piglin trade, and maybe also from nether fortresses, so it's not too hard to get. Paper is the main thing I'm aware of that's really hard to get in the nether. I guess sugar, too, and also redstone and spider eyes, for potion making? Actually, lots of potion stuff - rabbit's feet, turtle shells, golden carrots and glistening melons, Phantom membranes, etc. Most of these should probably not occur in the nether, but it might be reasonable to offer other things that can be used instead. And if you really wanted to get crazy, you could always offer new potions that could be made with stuff from the nether. |
Oh, feathers! There's no good source of feathers in the nether, so far as I'm aware, that's why I suggested being able o use nether quartz to make arrows. You can get full arrows from killing skeletons, and from piglin bastion loot, but not feathers. You can get string from striders, and as a piglin trade. And maybe as loot. Food is kind've a pain, it's basically just pork from hoglins, and maybe mushroom soup. And Those fire berries in Ashy Shoals, I guess. |
Actually, one thing that might make sense is a way to make leather into parchment - Like, you treat it with magma cream and something else and then you get 3 or 4 pieces of parchment from a hide, which you can then use as a substitute for paper. |

For slimeballs, a way to render magma cream down into blaze powder and slimeballs could be a thing, though it probably shouldn't be easy. Maybe you combine it with something to just produce slimeballs? The blaze powder is probably the more valuable component. :/ |
Hmm. For redstone and diamonds, maybe have a really rare and difficult thing that gives you Blood Diamonds, and then you can process them somehow to get redstone and diamonds? |
I'm a bit wary of this because Better Nether already adds so many ways to get overworld things in the nether; and using these mods together seems somewhat common. Having multiple mods add in ways to get overworld things seems a bit much. Also many of these things seem like little extras that would be best added with a datapack. I should add, there's something I don't like more generally about making sure overworld gameplay is possible in the nether. Pure nether runs are a cool idea, but they're not what the typical player does. In my opinion the nether should tend more to offer something different than the overworld. Rather than providing a way to get slime, there could be "magma slime blocks" or "ectoplasm blocks" with somewhat different properties from slime blocks. Rather than craftable pistons or redstone, there could be some very different automation methods. Rather than providing paper for fireworks, there could be a different way of getting airborne. (Vanilla Minecraft already has tridents as an alternative. Maybe something with fiery updrafts could work?) |
At the moment it's not possible to get paper in the nether, so far as I'm aware, which makes a lot of enchanting harder. Diamonds can only be found in nether fortresses (And maybe piglin bastions?), which aren't too rare, but still make it really hard to get the stuff. Having another source for these resources would make nether survival more interesting. Now, as a general principle, if something is available in both the overworld and the nether, getting it in the nether should probably be harder and more dangerous, so don't make any of these sources too easy.
