Species names that include non alpha characters

After experimenting with vioplot, i was interested to try vioplotx for the added customisation but unlike the original, this version gives an "unexpected symbol" error with species names in the format such as 'H. sapiens'

Is this an intended change from the original or an error somewhere in the code? Any suggestions how to run with names in that format?
