Custom variable attributes in SPSS files

I am investigating the use of SAV files as container format for tabular data. I like attribute and value labels, and the other information on variable type you can encode, but I'm missing a "Comment" attribute. SPSS supports custom attributes, is there a way to read them with ReadStat?

This is not currently possible with ReadStat.
