We recommend using the [wp-env package](/packages/env/README.md) for setting WordPress environment locally. You'll need to install Docker to use `wp-env`. See the [Development Environment tutorial for additional details](/docs/getting-started/devenv/README.md).
> Note: To install Docker on Windows 10 Home Edition, follow the [install instructions from Docker for Windows with WSL2](https://docs.docker.com/docker-for-windows/wsl/).

### Using Local or MAMP

As an alternative to Docker and `wp-env`, you can also use [Local by Flywheel](https://localbyflywheel.com/), [WampServer](http://www.wampserver.com/en/), or [MAMP](https://www.mamp.info/) to run a local WordPress environment. To do so clone and install Gutenberg as a regular plugin in your installation by creating a symlink or copying the directory to the proper `wp-content/plugins` directory.

Docker is just one method to run a local WordPress environment. Block development and extending WordPress is done using normal plugins, so any WordPress environment can be used. Here are some alternatives that you can consider which do not require installing Docker.

- [Local by Flywheel](https://localbyflywheel.com/) - Local is a single application you download and install. You will need to know where the plugin directory is located after install. If you create a site called `mywp` typically the plugin directory is installed at `~\Local Sites\mywp\app\public\wp-content\plugins`

- [WampServer](http://www.wampserver.com/en/) or [MAMP](https://www.mamp.info/) environments, both are quite similar to Local, combining a web server, PHP, and database. However these tools are not WordPress specific, so if you are not already using them, Local might be an easier option.
