I have sfwbar at the top, which is set up to show the current window title. Window borders are set to have very slight rounding. Also, unfocused windows have a slightly lower opacity.

Sorry to bother you, what is your file manager? I'm using Dophin but I have black folder/files names on dark background and in general a light theme in all kde apps on Niri. I don't get how to apply (kde) theme in Niri too. Can you/someone give a tip to me? Thanks!

Thinner vertical waybar, rounded corners and global theme switching, even applied to Neovim!

Without the delay of some GTK apps, the theme switching animation would be perfect yet I don't want to delay the whole animation to wait for them

By several scripts: setbg, setcolor and some config in Neovim. The setbg corresponds to the background option in Neovim, while setcolor corresponds to :colorscheme .... Furthermore, you also need to modify the GTK themes that will be applied to adopt these script.

Do you have your dotfiles posted anywhere? Those dmenus look really nice to use, and i'm also curious about what all the animated windows are?

I am on Arch linux and some of the packages can be from the AUR or pipx: helix, clock-tui, pipes.c, asciiquarium, btop, harlequin, waybar, fuzzel, mpv, kitty.

I don't have the dotfiles hosted anywhere yet. I tried attaching them to this comment but it's really not suited to share so much code and can't attach files either. I will put everything on github and then post a link to that here.

I have made the waybar very simple now though, but you will be easily able to achieve what was in the video because most stuff's been just commented out but still present in the file.

I missed networkmanager-dmenu. Also here are the dotfiles. You will want to look at music-player and video-player scripts in .local/bin/. Pressing / in mpv (both terminal and gui) brings up the playlist navigation.

PS: I hate distractions. Thus, my notifications are as minimal and non distracting as possible. Working with the screen covered, youll see only small indicators in gray if nothing happend or blue if some notifications got send.

Been loving my time on niri! Thanks @YaLTeR for showing me the light of scrolling tiling window managers! 🙏

First time since 2018 or so that I'm trying a different window environment (previously on EXWM). I noticed that tiling sometimes gets annoying (even if you have the flexibility of Emacs' buffer management), especially when things start getting resized randomly as you move windows around. Standard "stacking" WMs get messy though and need lots of manual intervention. Scrolling seems like a good middle.

The spatial nature of scrolling also seems very cool (as if the brain is better able to remember where what is located), it might even offset the pain of using Wayland with all of its alpha-quality issues (plus, Niri being seemingly very well written helps with this!).

So thanks for this, and keep it up!

niri, Fedora 40 and waybar, featuring some ancient desktop background Google scraped off a mostly broken starmen.net thread (google search "starman earthbound wallpaper"). very very crusty but that just makes it look like.. a scan of a daft punk album cover, or something

right-padding with a vertical bar is very nice, makes it a little easier to keep track of infinitely-scrolling desktop space:

waybar dotfiles, feel free to poke around yourself and/or give suggestions because I think the double-emdash in between time and date is a liiiiittle ugly. just a little bit. (-6px left-padding is for symmetry; I've found 12px is a nice window gap size)

For years I've had the icons of windows on each workspace in my bar, and in every single bar and WM combination I've tried that has been super difficult to achieve in a non-hacky way, until niri-ipc events were merged.

It relies on a small utility that communicates with niri-ipc and prints a new message to eww whenever the workspace configuration changes https://gitlab.com/TheZoq2/nirieww

I recently got a freebie laptop from work. Sadly, the screen is 1366x768, so I had to optimize niri and waybar from my desktop (3440x1440 ultrawide) config to use fewer pixels.

The far left waybar widget is a custom one that grabs the active window title via niri IPC.
