The UFO2/UFO3 hack has been in place for a while as a way to continue supporting older RoboFont v1.X which did not support UFO3. Recent (May 2020) changes to fontTools exposed the risks of maintaining this hack in AFDKO.

Adjustments have been made to accommodate the current round of changes, but a decision has been made to remove this hack by end-of-year 2020. A FutureWarning will be added to checkoutlinesufo.py very soon to give users ample notice to make any upgrades necessary.
