This file is Readme.Solaris.

WARNING: All Solaris coda is still ALPHA code.

At this point, both servers and clients have been tested.  Most recent
work has been directed at the clients.

The build and install have been tested on Solaris 2.6 (sparc) and
Solaris 7 (i386).  The sparc version was tested on both a sparc 5 and
a sparc Ultra 10.

To build Coda on a Solaris system, you must first make sure
that C/C++ compiler, perl, GNU make and readline are installed 
on your machine. Beware! Solaris make wont' work!

Solaris packages of gcc, perl and GNU make, which can simply be installed
by pkgadd or admintool, can be downloaded from http://sunfreeware.com/.
You may also need gzip if it is not installed.

Also, the Solaris package of gdb includes readline.  

To install readline and not install gdb:
	get the readline tar.gz
		ftp to ftp.gnu.org
		cd /pub/gnu/readline
		get readline-4.0.tar.gz
		quit ftp.
	tar xvzf readline-4.0.tar.gz
	cd readline-4.0
	./configure
	make install

Building Coda:

1.  Build and install liblwp.  Get the current lwp release from
    ftp.coda.cs.cmu.edu in the directory /pub/coda/src.

	a) gunzip lwp-1.?.tar
	b) tar xf lwp.1.?.tar
	c) cd lwp.1.?
	d) mkdir obj
	e) cd obj
	f) ../configure
	g) make
	h) make install (as root if needed)

2.  If you plan to run a client, build and install the Solaris kernel
    module.  It is called solaris-coda.  It is also at ftp.coda.cs.cmu.edu.

	Read the build instructions contained in solaris-coda.

3.  Build Coda.
	
	Similar to liblwp except the installs.

4.  Installing a Server
	
	In the obj directory of coda, say "make server-install".
	Follow the documentation on how to set up your server.

5.  Installing a client

	In the obj directory of coda, say "make client-install".
	Follow the documentation on how to set up your client.
	You should set up the venus.conf file, usually found in
	the directory /usr/local/etc/coda.
