I just thought of a middle-ground between the linear and gaussian beam shapes. I could have the width be linear but change the brightness of the output. This should look more accurate than both of the other shapes at small scales.
I might also be able to apply the same logic to the digital beam shape? Maybe it should be a modifier that's applicable to any beam shape instead of a new beam shape altogether.
