Issue description

Current behavior:

There a couple of bug fixes that apply to the 3.6.x branch too, and since it still is in LTS, I think those should be backported. I would be specially interested in #1809.

Expected behavior:

As a LTS branch, 3.6.x should have bug fixes backported that make sense.
