I use xcape and am very happy.

Feature Request for Increased Happiness:

If a modifier key triggers the xcape feature, ie key-up within
timeout, could xcape produce a short (customizable) tone -- would act
as training wheels and might even be useful permanently if it could
simulate a key-click sound.
