Images fails to be inserted into PDFS

Compare two reports:

2. https://github.com/andkov/Longitudinal_Models_of_Religiosity_NLSY97/blob/master/Vignettes/fig_size/choose_fig_size.Rmd

The first report when run does not inserts the produced images in the PDF file, while the second does. I cannot figure why, although I've figure out that it might have something to do with "out.width=" option in chunk options. What might be going on here?

Don't know, but I haven't used the new specifications that came out last week. It's weird for me to even think that an Rmd leads to a PDF.

My recommended, systematic approach is to create simplified copies of the two that have just enough to exhibit the different behavior.

A shot in the dark is that the retina setting in the first example is causing the difference.

fig.retina= is an option for html only, it has no influence on pdf.
