As with tracking taxonomic metadata, reference data sourcing and handling could also be more formalised and integrated.

• Link to reference databases
• match data references to database entries, obtain DOI?

This could be tricky with references data in spreadsheets requiring some developed fuzzy matching to db entries but could be a very effective way of both bolstering reproducibility, by providing direct links to the data sources, but also improve our ability to track duplication of datapoints through compendiums.
