Core Updates

  • Collection repositories are in the process of moving from default branch "master" to "main"
    • this is a somewhat complicated process as we have tooling that needs to update as we do this, but most repos are migrated, and the remainder should be along soon
    • This might result in some dead links in, for example. docs... please bear with us and report anything if you notice orphaned references
  • Virtual Contributor's Summit happened on Monday, covered a variety of topics including collections and communities going forward
  • We're starting through tasks for the next release of our supported collections

Core Updates

  • https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0FmYCf7ocrbmgUsXJFqJrIKQRg9hz02h is the recordings from the contributor's summit last week
  • This past week has seen fixes and improvements in testing throughout the supported collections
    • The eventual plan is to reduce reliance on integration tests with corresponding increases in unit tests
    • This should hopefully increase PR testing throughput and also better allow contributors to test their own changes before it gets to zuul
    • This is obviously a work in progress and has no ETA at present, but work is ongoing
  • https://github.com/orgs/ansible-collections/projects/3 is where you can see all the work currently planned or in progress for this release

Core Updates

  • Some collections have transitioned from mostly-integration to mostly-unit testing, notably vyos and netcommon
    • Hopefully this has resulted in quicker zuul turnaround
    • We will continue to try to improve the ability to merge a new PR with confidence that it passes our requirements and won't break other things
  • Otherwise, work on OSPF modules should be picking up soon

Core Updates

  • Supported collections have had a new full release on Friday.
    • Specific version numbers will vary by collection, depending on whether new features were added and what the previous version number was
    • We're using semver, so for example ansible.netcommon released 1.1.0 to denote the addition of the experimental libssh connection plugin
    • Check the collections on galaxy.ansible.com for specifics
  • https://github.com/orgs/ansible-collections/projects/3 is where we plan out future work, check that to see what will be in upcoming releases

Core Updates

  • AnsibleFest is next week!
  • Contributor's Summit is Monday the 12th and Thursday the 15th
  • IRC meeting is cancelled next week, due to Fest
  • Most supported collections had a release last week
    • Some, (vyos for example) had no changes since the last release and did not issue a new release, this is expected to happen from time to time
  • https://github.com/orgs/ansible-collections/projects/3 is a good place to see what's going on with supported content

Core Updates

  • AnsibleFest is over, but you can still watch all the sessions you missed over at https://www.ansible.com/ansiblefest
    • I'll be sure to link to the Contributor Summit recordings as well once I know where to find them
  • Development continues on supported platform collections, as well as a few new collections that will hopefully make using Ansible a bit easier
    • https://github.com/ansible-collections/ansible.utils is aimed at things that aren't domain-specific, but nice to have
    • and ansible.network is a (still mostly theoretical) collection for things like filter plugins or cli_parse
    • These are basically attempts to keep optional content out of netcommon so that development can be more focused
  • For platforms, OSPFv3 modules are getting finished for release at the end of the month

Core Updates

  • There will be a release of most supported collections by the end of this month.

Splitting up the Docsite

  • Problem statement - Ansible pypi package called 2.11 will release in jan/feb? and some time after that, ansible-base will release with a version called 2.11 (but a different 2.11)
  • We are brainstorming ideas for splitting up the docssite at https://etherpad.opendev.org/p/ansible-documentation-split - we need your feedback!
  • We will discuss this over the next few weeks on Thursdays at 10:30 am ET on #ansible-docs. Would love your participation/feedback
