molecule converge role name problem

molecule (3.5.2) test only seems to work if converge uses the project directory as the role name. it ignores the meta/main.yml. I don't think it's just me because I can reproduce the problem in a public repo. (https://github.com/geerlingguy/ansible-role-security).
molecule test doesn't work there unless I change the converge role name to the project directory name.

Ant guidance will be very much appreciated. I was sure this worked before.
