Use the direction-{keyword}
utilities to control an element’s animation-delay
.
<button class="animate-bounce direction-normal ...">Button A</button>
<button class="animate-bounce direction-reverse ...">Button B</button>
<button class="animate-bounce direction-alternate ...">Button C</button>
<button class="animate-bounce direction-alternate-reverse ...">Button C</button>
Tailwind lets you conditionally apply utility classes in different states using variant modifiers. For example, use hover:direction-normal
to only apply the direction-normal
utility on hover.
<div
class="animate-bounce anim-duration-300 anim-delay-150 hover:direction-normal"
>
<!-- ... -->
</div>
For a complete list of all available state modifiers, check out the Hover, Focus, & Other States documentation.
You can also use variant modifiers to target media queries like responsive breakpoints, dark mode, prefers-reduced-motion, and more. For example, use md:direction-normal
to apply the direction-normal
utility at only medium screen sizes and above.
<div
class="animate-bounce anim-duration-300 anim-delay-150 md:direction-normal"
>
<!-- ... -->
</div>

By default, Tailwind provides animation-direction
utilities for all of the built-in browser keyword options. You can customize these values by editing theme.animationDirection
or theme.extend.animationDirection
in your tailwind.config.js
file.
// @filename tailwind.config.js
module.exports = {
theme: {
extend: {
animationDirection: {
"normal-reverse": "normal, reverse",
},
},
},
}
Learn more about customizing the default theme in the theme customization documentation.
If you need to use a one-off animation-direction
value that doesn’t make sense to include in your theme, use square brackets to generate a property on the fly using any arbitrary value.
<div class="direction-[normal,reverse]">
<!-- ... -->
