AV-lab is part of KU Center for Autonomous Robotic Systems (KUCARS), a research center dedicated to 1) Robotics for Infrastructure Inspection, 2) Robotics for Extreme Environments, 3) Robotics for Industrial Applications. AV-lab work scope falls under Theme 1, on persistent surveillance of civil and industrial infrastructures based on unmanned vehicles, led by Prof. Jorge Dias.

The AV Lab is transitioning from phase 1 to phase 2, as illustrated below.

Phase 1

The first phase of AV lab involved multiple research projects:

  • Project Title: “Risk-Aware Narrow AI for Autonomous Vehicles”

    • Duration: Jul 2020 – June 2023
    • Budget: AED 2,760,000 (USD 751,423.80)
    • Grant ref: CIRA-2020-286
    - Sponsor: Khalifa University, UAE, in collaboration with the Australian National University (ANU)
  • Project Title: “Development of Autonomous Driving Electric Vehicle Based on Infrastructure Sensing”

    • Duration: Aug 2019 – July 2022
    • Budget: AED 2,760,000 (USD 751,423.80)
    • Grant ref: KKJRC-2019-Trans1
    - Sponsor: Khalifa University, UAE, in collaboration with KAIST, South Korea
  • Project Title: “Multi-vehicle Coordination with Bounded Risk”

    • Duration: April 2018 – Nov 2020
    • Budget: AED 2,095,847 (USD 570,609)
    • Grant Ref: MM2018-002
    - Sponsor: Masdar Institute, Khalifa University, UAE, in collaboration with [Mers group](https://www.csail.mit.edu/research/model-based-embedded-and-robotics-systems-group), CSAIL, MIT

Phase 2

The second phase of KU-AV Lab includes the following interconnected projects: * R&D Program to address safety and operational issues for AV implementation in the Abu Dhabi and UAE road network. * A Passenger Service on the route shown in the figure * An AV Data Center with datasets collected on the KU-AV Lab routes for training and testing AI-driven algorithms. The data collection will be done during the timetabled passenger service runs, * Smart Campus Project – To install a 5G network and additional sensors on campus to provide V2X connectivity for enhanced safety. * Outreach – Competitions, training (e.g. Al Nokbha Associated), and providing test facilities to UAE entities (e.g., DMT, RTA)
