If anyone is interested, I can contribute some code to implement this (using https://github.com/mostynb/go-grpc-compression for formats other than gzip). But compressed-blobs bytestream and the work-in-progress BatchUpdateBlobs / BatchReadBlobs API is probably better to use.
