The albumtype currently contains only the type attribute of the release-group element in the xml, but the're also <primary-type> and <secondary-type-list> which may contain useful information (for example that https://musicbrainz.org/release/b549c4db-057f-44e1-802f-8dd0cf5b1e7e has type Soundtrack in addition to Compilation).

Very cool; thanks for pointing this out. The XML for that release clearly shows all the release types.

Any ideas for how to store multiple types in the metadata tags? Null-separated list in the albumtype field? Separate tags for primary and secondary?

It might make sense to use separate tags for them because (for some weird reason) it's possible to not choose any primary but some secondary release types, so merging them into one tag would give no guarantees about what's the primary one: the first or maybe there's none - unless you have a static list of all primary and secondary types you'll never know.
