looks like changing to United does come up with UI-elements again after some time, but generally feels very slow?

Since Calamares is just running the lookandfeeltool, there is not much I can do about the speed of applying a theme. You can test it as well from the command line, e.g.

lookandfeeltool --resetLayout --apply United

In the current (0329) image, Latte-dock seems to be not-installed or incomplete; switching to Cupertine pops up various errors and no dock. It also takes about 15 seconds to complete.

Switching to United takes about 12 seconds. Sometimes 15. Of that run time, 2 seconds is in lookandfeeltool itself, the rest is plasma doing its thing so Calamares doesn't even know it is taking that long.
