I fixed this one way for our fork here. I'm not sure this is the most scalable way of supporting such functions though.

@AlecStrong, any info on if this is coming soon? Do you intend to support the more complex cases like json_each?

the complex ones look hard, probably not in 2.0

Do I still need to have my own sqlite compilation which includes json extension?

yes, we're not going to start distributing SQLite.
