Deep Belief Networks are low level, latent, and non-linear representations of input word
vectors. Traditionally these algorithms have been slow on training and require heavy
computations. There is upcoming interest in the area of deep learning, particularly in image
recognition as it has promising results, which makes it interesting to apply these existing algorithms in text areas. In recent years practical discovery of fundamental units in deep
belief networks such as Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBMs) and auto-encoders have
opened new avenues with cheaper computations enabling us to apply it into deeper settings
so as to provide learning in an abstracted and layered fashion.

Text mining and feature extraction is an important part of the data pipeline for search and
text analytics based companies such as Buzzfeed, Yelp etc. Deep learning research is catching the
attention of academics and industry alike, making it important to have series of replicated
works on different types of text corpora to establish use cases and claims made by theorist
groups working this area. This field has revived interest amongst NLP scientists to use it for text
mining purposes, in particular the NLP group led by Jufrasky at Stanford and Hinton at University
of Toronto has published some papers in this area.

The goals are to implement theoretical techniques and benchmark their performance through rigorous testing while documenting the different use cases. Some basic tasks we are looking into include implementing a autoencoder, implementing deep learning in a basic text setting, finalize the text corpora etc. and more. Further progress updates to be posted later in the Fall.
