We wish to build a New York City travel framework using Twitter data to form interactive visualizations relevant for anyone planning a trip or curious about what's fun to do nearby. The goal is for the framework to be extensible to any city.

We plan on extracting tweets and user profiles relevant to travel and entertainment in NYC. We will then mine the data for text features including location, timing, retweets, user info, favorites etc. Using different NLP techniques and social network analysis techniques on the users, we will be able to provide customized maps according to a user's preferences of events and points of interest in NYC to users.

We will be using the following techniques and algorithms -
• Machine Learning methods like Bag of words, Naive Bayes, k-Means clustering, topic modeling.
• Pattern Matching, regular expressions.
• Graphical methods e.g. influence, communities in a social network.

We plan on starting with a focused initial topic.

Sample Topic - Coffee
We will bucket all the tweets/users about coffee together and ask the
following questions:
• What are the most famous coffee shops?
• What are the twitter reviews for these coffee shops?
• Where do I go to get good coffee near Brooklyn?
• What are people saying about these coffee shops (right now)?

Further progress updates to be posted later in Fall
