By "cartesian" do you mean EPSG:3857 aka EPSG:900913 aka "The Google Projection"? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_Mercator_projection#Identifiers

Otherwise there are a lot of things that could be meant by either "cartesian" or "mercator"...
