Desired Feature

When providing support, it's useful to have the initial version of Container Linux that was installed on a system. Collect it in Mayday, and possibly in the issue reporting form.

Other Information

The version is recorded in /var/lib/update_engine/prefs/aleph-version, but that's an implementation detail of update_engine that isn't documented anywhere and probably shouldn't be. The file is not very usable either, since it's only readable by root and isn't created until the first time an update is attempted. Consider adding a unit that conditionally copies the aleph-version to a more plausible name/path, and teaching Mayday to read it.

Thank you for reporting this issue. Unfortunately, we don't think we'll end up addressing it in Container Linux.

We're now working on Fedora CoreOS, the successor to Container Linux, and we expect most major development to occur there instead. Meanwhile, Container Linux will be fully maintained into 2020 but won't see many new features. We appreciate your taking the time to report this issue and we're sorry that we won't be able to address it.
