First, I want to express my gratitude for your ongoing support and feedback throughout the years with our container images. Our initial intention was to provide a somewhat opinionated set of images to help onboard the community to container workloads, and it seems we've achieved that goal together.
However, we've decided to pivot towards a more flexible approach, leading us to create a new repository featuring a baseline container image: craftcms/image. This new image offers PHP-FPM without any specific opinions on the HTTP server and is based on Ubuntu. While we initially experimented with Fedora, we encountered some upstream reliability issues, specifically with Python and Supervisor, that caused us to rethink our decision on the underlying distribution.
Most of the features you've come to rely on, like configuring PHP via environment variables, are still available in this new image. We're eager to hear your thoughts, feedback, and any feature requests you might have.
While some of you are actively using this repository for production workloads, we understand this might be a irritant but we have been testing the new images for quite some time internally to ensure they are flexible to meet most needs. Please let us know if need clarification on anything by creating or contributing to a discussion.
As we move forward, our primary focus will be on enhancing and maintaining the new images. This current repository will be archived and read-only in the near future.
Thank you all again for your understanding and continued collaboration!
