About the Functionalities.

Can you describe me how this uploading works from the hardware side? Does the ESP8266 become a serial programmer just like the FT232 or CH340G? And is there any way to use it as a programmer? My main objective is to use it like a ch340G with both UART read and write functions,(I gues it has only UART write function which uploads firmware to microcontroller) like it should be able to both program and also receive data. Is that possible?
