TODO:
1. Transaction semantics on foreign data source? Sketch:
* Provide the following functions callable from SQL:
- do_begin(data_source_id INTEGER)
This should fail and raise an error if the remote data
store has no way to do a rollback.
- do_commit(data_source_id INTEGER)
- do_rollback(data_source_id INTEGER)
* For transaction-capable remote databases, when no do_begin() has
been called, do:
- Per-row triggers which, instead of executing SQL immediately
as they do now, pile it into a temporary store, maybe a perl
array which spills to a temp table when it gets too big, for
some value of "too big."
- Per-statement triggers which fire after the per-row trigger
and walk the temporary store from the per-row triggers.
* For transaction-capable remote databases, when do_begin() *has*
been called, do:
- Per-row triggers as above, only they try to execute at each
row. They raise an ERROR if they fail
- Per-statement triggers which become a no-op because you need
to
- Call do_commit() or do_rollback() manually at the end of the
remote transaction.
2. Some kind of better documentation system, possibly docbook. This should
be able to generate HTML, PDF, POD(?) and others as needed.
3. Better testing for each foreign data source. Should these include
different versions of foreign data sources?
4. Data type mappings for each DBI data source type:
* DB2
* Excel(?)
* Firebird
* Informix
* Microsoft SQL Server
* Mimer
* MySQL
* Oracle
* Sybase
5. Some way to materialize the foreign data source into real PostgreSQL
tables.
