IDE crashes after importing Sample Projects

Hello guys,

I am currently trying to write a Code generating plugin for Che.
After starting in December last year I have got some basic things working, but after returning to work in 2019 my project did not work anymore.

In order to check whether this is a problem of my code or a general bug I created another Workspace with a sample Project (https://github.com/che-samples/che-ide-server-extension.git)
and it crashed immediately. Meaning the IDE opened, but was completely empty I couldnt create a project and when pressing import project I instantly got the error "Importing project failed"

(Later I tried it with older che Versions, 6.15, 6.14, where I was able to get the sample project imported but the build/deployment then failed.)

I really hope you can help me out with this problem, because I am under some time pressure...

Reproduction Steps

Start Che with " sudo docker run -it --rm -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock -v ~/EclipseChe:/data eclipse/che start "
After Successful start of the container go to localhost:8080
Choose the Eclipse Che stack
Add the Sample Project "che-ide-server-extension"
Start the Workspace

OS and version:

Docker Version: 18.06.1-ce
Che Version: latest (6.16.0)
Ubuntu 17.10
Ubuntu 18.4
