Your use case

What would you like to do?

Improve the landing experience of a user when they follow a "room invite link" like https://matrix.to/#/@alice:matrix.org

Why would you like to do it?

We currently use this type of links as "invites" but the landing experience is not optimised for invites at all

How would you like to achieve it?

Currently the only thing this will do is to open the right sidebar and show the "User Info". From there one needs to know that they should click the very tiny "Message" link to open a DM.

We should have a proper UI that is a bit more inviting

Have you considered any alternatives?

Quick idea:

Mockup:

  • Just focus on message and copy link as primary actions

@niquewoodhouse what do you think about making use of the new invite-on-first-message stuff to just take you right to a fake-room with the user so you can immediately get started, with their profile in the right panel
Also what is the checkmark shield looking thing in the mockup?

I don't know what that is - is there a PR about it?

I think, because this is labelled as a chronic issue, I'd bias towards fixing with existing UI - like the #14736. I added a flow here if it helps.

@amshakal & @gsouquet as discussed today, let's timebox an effort on this in order to close it.

As designed by @amshakal , we're improving the right panel view, and will display the right panel. View Figma as a reference

Thanks for your feedback - please raise a new issue regarding any information you think is 'missing' from the new experience, mark it as "enhancement" and we'll take a look :)
