If someone mentions a handle that whole post's text color becomes bright red for that user. If that post is long then of course the whole paragraph turns red, which is highly unlegible. Color convention also tells the user that part is somehow erroneous, faulty.
My suggestion is to reduce the color highlighting to the specific handle part of the text only. In the case of replies, no color highlighting is needed since the context of that message is already included.
