What does the parameter <interpreter>mean?

When I changed the parameter to the gcc directory, It throw a segmentation error during the process of encrypting the file.

root@ubuntu:~/Desktop/tools/sherlocked# ./sherlocked  /root/Desktop/test/compress/viewer  viewer-sher 12345678  /usr/bin/gcc 
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
