What's the point of .env file?

I'd like to set environment variables through .env file and I saw that already exists in the project but didn't find any place where it was used in the project.

Does it have any reason to exist atm?

Wouldn't it be cleaner to use .env and dotenv package for environment variables instead of better-npm-run and betterScripts object in package.json?

Possibly. I don't have any experience with that. If you'd like to make a PR, I'd definitely consider it.
