ESS-DIVE Material Vocabulary

We have modified the original SESAR IGSN list of materials for Environmental Systems Science (ESS) samples, using existing ontology terms from Environment Ontology (ENVO) or Plant Ontology (PO) - see definition link to ontology term details (IRI for term). Currently, you must use SESAR terms to register samples for IGSNs, and we recommend entering the more specific ESS-DIVE proposed material under "Field name (informal classification".

Please provide feedback on any additional terms needed, modifications to definitions needed, or terms that should be removed.

ESS-DIVE Proposed Material - Enter as Field Name (Informal Classification) where needed IGSN SESAR Material Definition (with link to ENVO or PO)
gaseous environmental material Gas A material entity which is composed of one or more chemical entities and has neither independent shape nor volume but tends to expand indefinitely.
particulate matter Particulate Particulate material is an environmental material which is composed of microscopic portions of solid or liquid material suspended in another environmental material.
particulate matter: particulate organic matter Particulate Particulate matter which is composed primarily of organic material.
rock Rock A rock is a naturally occurring solid aggregate of one or more minerals or mineraloids.
soil Soil Soil is an environmental material which is primarily composed of minerals, varying proportions of sand, silt, and clay, organic material such as humus, gases, liquids, and a broad range of resident micro- and macroorganisms.
sediment Sediment Sediment is an environmental substance comprised of any particulate matter that can be transported by fluid flow and which eventually is deposited as a layer of solid particles on the bedor bottom of a body of water or other liquid.
snow Ice Snow is an environmental material which is primarily composed of flakes of crystalline water ice.
ice Ice An ice is an environmental material which is either frozen or which is maintained in a solid state by gravitational forces or pressure.
permafrost Ice Soil or rock and included ice or organic material at or below the freezing point of water (0 degrees Celsius or 32 degrees Fahrenheit) for two or more years.
liquid water Liquid>aqueous An environmental material primarily composed of dihydrogen oxide in its liquid form.
surface water Liquid>aqueous Water that is found on the surface of an astronomical object.
groundwater Liquid>aqueous Underground water which is located in pore spaces found in rock or unconsolidated deposits such as soil, clay, or gravel.
porewater Liquid>aqueous Underground water which is located in pore spaces found in rock or unconsolidated deposits such as soil, clay, or gravel.
organic material Organic Material Environmental material derived from living organisms and composed primarily of one or more biomacromolecules.
organic material: biofilm material Organic Material Material derived from a biofilm, an aggregate of microorganisms in which cells adhere to each other and/or to a surface. These adherent cells are frequently embedded within a self-produced matrix of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS). Biofilm EPS, which is also referred to as slime, is a polymeric conglomeration generally composed of extracellular DNA, proteins, and polysaccharides in various configurations.
organic material: plant litter Organic Material Leaf litter is dead plant material, such as leaves, bark, needles, and twigs, that has fallen to the ground.
organic material: soil organic matter Organic Material Organic material in soil, which consists of plant and animal residues at various stages of decomposition, cells and tissues of soil organisms, and substances synthesized by soil organisms.
plant structure: leaf Plant Structure A phyllome (PO:0006001) that is not associated with a reproductive structure.
plant structure: root Plant Structure A plant axis (PO:0025004) that lacks shoot axis nodes (PO:0005004) and usually grows indeterminately.
plant structure: stem Plant Structure A shoot axis (PO:0025029) that is the primary axis of a plant.
